The Hydro Bike is driven by a new hydrostatic drivetrain with energy storage. It is mainly manufactured from carbon fiber (CFRP) and not heavier than a regular bicycle.
The frame consists of the accumulator, hydro-block, and tank. The hydraulic wheel motors are integrated into the rear wheel suspension and possibly the fork in front. The motors are driven by the pressurized fluid from the accumulator, charged by pushing the pedals with non-strenuous efforts, or the recuperated energy from braking or driving downhill. The shock absorber of the rear wheel suspension also pumps energy into the accumulator. The stored energy and powerful motors provide high performance for driving uphill and acceleration without additional efforts for the driver. The capacity of the accumulator is good for a driving distance of about 1 mile at 10 mph.
Charging can also be achieved by an E-Module driven by a battery, commonly used in power tools. The battery drives an electro/hydraulic unit, pumping fluid from the tank into the accumulator. The clip-on module can simply be attached to the frame and the battery (2.1 lbs.) easily exchanged and charged. One charge of a 6 Ah battery provides a distance of about 8 miles at 12mph.
